6-Day Umbwe Route

The 6-day Umbwe Route is renowned as one of Kilimanjaro’s most challenging and direct routes, ideal for experienced and adventurous trekkers. While the trek itself spans 6 days on the mountain, the full itinerary is 8 days, including arrival and departure.

Trekking Time: 4–6 hoursDistance: 6 km (3.7 miles)Altitude Gain: +1,126mHighlights:Continue through the forest as it transitions to moorland, with stunning views of Kibo Peak.Arrive at Barranco Camp, famous for its views of the Barranco Wall and southern glaciers.

Trekking Time: 4–5 hoursDistance: 5 km (3.1 miles)Altitude Gain: +19mHighlights:Tackle the Barranco Wall, an exciting but non-technical climb.Trek through alpine desert to Karanga Camp, a perfect spot for acclimatization.

Trekking Time: 3–5 hoursDistance: 4 km (2.5 miles)Altitude Gain: +678mHighlights:Ascend to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt.Rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Trekking Time: 10–14 hoursDistance: 19 km (12 miles)Altitude Gain: +1,222m (to the summit), -2,827m (to Mweka Camp)Highlights:Start the summit climb at midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak for an unforgettable sunrise.Celebrate your achievement before descending to Mweka Camp for the night.
